Halki Seminary

  • DSC00655
The Patriarchal Theological Seminary of Halki is located on the Turkish island known as Heyelbiada in the Bosporus straits. It was closed in 1971 by the Turkish government and is the subject of much controversy since it is the only seminary in Turkey and the position of Ecumenical Patriarch can only be filled by a Turkish citizen. I gew up on East 89th STreet and also attended PS 151. I was one of the unfortunates kids who went to "Release Time" and spent my Thursday afternoons sitting in the classrooms of Our Lady of Good Counsel. I don't remember Sister Brigid, but I do remember Sister Robert who was stern but looked sweet, and Sister John who looked stern but was sweet. My mother tried to get me to go to OLGC full time but I carried on in a most uncharacteristically hysterical way, so she dropped that idea. I enjoy reading about the old neighborhood and our school from your perspective. Thanks so much for sharing!

Elizabeth,

Thrilled that someone from the old neighborhood took the time to read my musings. I think the sisters were very much like our teachers at PS 151, consummate professionals who did a wonderful job educating the working class children of their surrounding area. I for one am indebted to them. In particular 4th grade teacher we shared named Mrs. Levy, a tiny wisp of a woman with snow white hair who touched the lives of her many children. She gave me a diploma when I was able to recite the multiplication table from memory and started me on a lifelong quest in pursuit of learning. Wonderful memories.

Best wishes to you.

Stavros,
That's a wonderful story, but you're dead wrong on your fashion critique. You look mah-vuh-lous in that photo! And I couldn't imagine you in a Spin & Marty outfit -- ever.
Semper fi,
Kevin

Kev,

Mama would have loved to hear you say that. Even now I have a slight aversion to suits.:)

Searching for Ithaka

  • Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you're destined for. But don't hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you're old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you've gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you wouldn't have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you'll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean. C. P. Cavafy
