Halki Seminary

  • DSC00655
The Patriarchal Theological Seminary of Halki is located on the Turkish island known as Heyelbiada in the Bosporus straits. It was closed in 1971 by the Turkish government and is the subject of much controversy since it is the only seminary in Turkey and the position of Ecumenical Patriarch can only be filled by a Turkish citizen. Very glad to hear it, Saundra

Charles Notis

Stavros,

I cannot believe what I read yesterday in the Hellenic Voice. I was in tears reading the article about Politsani. My mother and I escaped from Politsani into Greece in October of 1954. I had just turned 10 years old. It's impossible to give you all the amazing details in this space, but perhaps we can communicate by email in the near future.

I now live in Des Moines, IA but came here from Brockton, MA to attend graduate school at Iowa State University way back in the fall of 1970. I met my wife here and this has been our home for many years now. My younger brother (he still lives in MA ) was born in the U.S. I have a few relatives in Portland, ME that you may know. The last name is Shamos. You may have also known my cousin Tony Notis who unfortunately passed away about 10 years ago.

I am SO happy I found your blog. I love the Epirotica tragouthia that I have been listening to here the past half hour. From your article in the Hellenic Voice, it sounded like you visited Politsani in the past 6 months or so. I think I vaguely remember Nicholaos and his wife Froso you referenced in the article. He would have been about 37 and I would have been not quite 10 in the summer of 1954. I will be anxious to hear from you.

The truth is that I have visited many countries around the world but I have never been there. It is an amazing land scape. Thank you for sharing the pictures because you gave the opportunity to discover that beauty. The second picture is spectacular!

Searching for Ithaka

  • Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you're destined for. But don't hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you're old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you've gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you wouldn't have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you'll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean. C. P. Cavafy
