Searching for Ithaka

  • Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you're destined for. But don't hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you're old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you've gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you wouldn't have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you'll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean. C. P. Cavafy

Halki Seminary

  • DSC00655
The Patriarchal Theological Seminary of Halki is located on the Turkish island known as Heyelbiada in the Bosporus straits. It was closed in 1971 by the Turkish government and is the subject of much controversy since it is the only seminary in Turkey and the position of Ecumenical Patriarch can only be filled by a Turkish citizen. maria

lovely memories stavro - i find myself wrapped in them these days too

Stavros

Looking back is a necessary part of aging. Some memories are sweet and we cherish them. Eventually you reach a point where there is more behind you than ahead. Understanding the past is necessary to acquire enough wisdom to meet the future with courage and a little bit of dignity.

Dimitri

Hi Stavro,
You keep evoking emotions with your uploaded music. The Epirus track is beautiful.
Yes similar to you, my great great grandfather fleed the first fire of Smyrna but ended up in Cyprus. His children were then forced out of Northern Cyprus. Not a great century but interesting to see how we deal with bad times. I remember my grandmother saying to her husband "we have lost the rings from our fingers but our hands are clean". The most resilient peoples I have seen in adversity.

Stavros

My choice of music probably doesn't appeal to most people, I'm glad however that you enjoy it. You're right about adversity. It can chew you up and spit you out or it can make you stronger even though it humbles us. I too would rather have clean hands. :)

Perhaps you will enjoy some of the music here:
