Halki Seminary

  • DSC00655
The Patriarchal Theological Seminary of Halki is located on the Turkish island known as Heyelbiada in the Bosporus straits. It was closed in 1971 by the Turkish government and is the subject of much controversy since it is the only seminary in Turkey and the position of Ecumenical Patriarch can only be filled by a Turkish citizen. Another resource in the Hamilton/Thornton tradition (albeit a but tangentially) is this page describing the family tree of the ancient Greek Gods: http://ludios.org/science/greekgods/ (don't forget to look at the large image of the tree, too).

Ha ha! Stavros, you cannot help covering your Christian butt but I, and you, know you are fighting a losing battle.

Stavros

GAYNC,

Thanks for the link.

Hermes,

Either someone pretending to be you wrote this comment or you are morphing into the Anglo-Saxon caricature you abhor so much. Nevertheless, I am always available to respond when you have something worthwhile to contribute.

Hermes

The latest comments by the President of SAE are very encouraging.

Ted

Stavros,
Thanks for publishing Professor Thornton's interview. The relevance of classical Greek civilization and philosophy of politics become even more sharply defined as we watch the collapse of "international politics" and the anomic behavior of many "international actors," including, and primarily, that of the United States. The sad fact remains that it is the Greeks -- who never fail to invoke their history -- who are leading in NOT recognizing the lessons our ancestors so abundantly provided. The current visit by Bakoyannis to Washington is such a glaring demonstration of exactly this attitude. The particulars of this visit are instructive.

Hermes

Thanks Stavros. That SAE link is absoloutely hilarius. Andrew Athens has presided over an organisation of monumental incompetance whilst he has done more work for the Jewish Lobby than for the Greek.

Stavros

Yes, Hermes, you are right as always.

Searching for Ithaka

  • Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you're destined for. But don't hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you're old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you've gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you wouldn't have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you'll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean. C. P. Cavafy
