In previous posts I've written about the story of the Battle of Crete and the Cretan Resistance as chronicled in the superb documentary directed by Christos Epperson and produced by Alex Spanos entitled "The 11th Day." I literally couldn't wait to get my sweaty little hands on this DVD. Everyday I would come home and ask my wife if it had arrived and everyday she would smile knowingly and give me the disappointing news. When it finally arrived, I tore the wrapper off like an excited little kid at Christmas, plopped myself down and watched the whole thing. It was well worth the nerve-wracking wait. As an added bonus there are hundreds of rare photographs with accompanying captions and dialog. I've made a montage courtesy of ONE TRUE MEDIA of a few of these photos with background music provided by Mikis Theodorakis. It is a piece appropriately called "I'll Throw a Stone at Life." The DVD costs a mere $20 bucks, which in my opinion is peanuts for what you get in return. Go to The 11th Day website and buy some so they don't sue me for using their pictures.

The most striking thing about the photos in this montage are the faces of those depicted. Look at them closely for they tell the story far better than I could ever describe using words. Nowadays many of us are wrapped up in our sad, shallow little lives and we often forget what is truly important. The nobility of one's soul is not defined by what we own, where we went to school or what kind of house we live in. It is defined in how we live our lives and most importantly what we do when we come face to face with our destiny. Looking at the faces, these Greeks are truly mythic figures in my mind and I cannot help but admire their courage and love of freedom.

Excellent comments. Amidst the hurley burley of contemporary distractions and feeble minded worship of popstars, hedge fund managers, sex crazed actresses and other assorted psychopaths all of us easily forget what life is really all about. The cultivation of the soul is THE objective of life. When looking at those real male and female faces my spine tingles and I am reminded of the old song Natane to '21 (If only it was 1821). I wish I was there in '42. Defiance and dignity - Axion Esti.
I will order this DVD tomorrow.
